About Us
The J.W. Vines Foundation Inc. was founded in 2001 as the philanthropic arm of the James Wesley Vines, Jr. M.D. Medical Society Inc. a component of the National Medical Association. The foundation has been designated as a 501c3 organization by the Internal Revenue Service.
Mission:
A) Identify and remedy health care disparities by increasing the number of primarily African American health professionals that serve or work in underserved communities of color.
B) To increase the diversity of health care professionals in the Inland Empire
Vision:
The J.W. Vines Foundation, Inc. is an organization that has the reputation for supporting students’ efforts to enter the medical and health professions and for its evolving growth into a multi-faceted entity with demonstrated success in advocating diversity through innovative approaches to education funding, recruitment, and retention.
Utilizing the network of Vines Medical Society members, the Vines Foundation provides mentoring, physician shadowing, and support to college students.
Programs
Student Support
The Vines Foundation will provide financial and other resources to students applying to programs in the health professions. The intent of the student support program is to assist students overcome barriers to their success.
Mentoring
The Foundation, in conjunction with the Vines Medical Society will match college students interested in the health professions with mentors. The mentor program offers students support and access to individuals in their field of interest.
Skill Building Workshops
The following workshops are designed to increase the skills of the students, to expose them to opportunities in the health professions, and to successfully complete their programs

A 4 to 6 week paid program which allows students to shadow professionals in the offices of surgeons, general practitioners, pediatricians, and dentists. The students get the unique opportunity of shadowing the various physicians, work with office staff in addition to giving weekly presentations on their findings, creating quite the memorable experiences.

A one week rigorous yet rewarding opportunity with partner H3 Missions, to assist physicians as they treat patients in various areas in Haiti still affected by the 7.0 earthquake that struck the island in 2010.

Q. Why was the J.W. Vines Medical Foundation formed?
A. The JWVMF was created in part to provide a vehicle to raise funds to support programs and activities that provide underrepresented high school and college Students from underserved communities in the Inland Empire with a better understanding of the academic requirements and skill sets necessary for admission to college and professional programs in the health professions.
Q. Are my donations to the Foundation tax deductible?
A. Your gift(s) are deductible as specified in IRS regulations. The J.W. Vines Medical Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Q. What types of activities are the students involved in?
A. The Foundation’s mentoring and outreach programs provide a forum and safe haven for dozens of students who in some cases, come from severely dysfunctional home environments. Students are invited to attend Medical Society meetings, participate in workshops, mentoring, internships, medical mission trips, peer discussions and fundraising events.
Q. How does the Foundation provide financial assistance to students?
A. The Foundation offers paid summer internships as well as financial assistance to students taking the MCAT and GRE prep courses, supplemental air and ground transportation for students traveling to professional school interviews. In addition, the Foundation has provided funding to disadvantaged students in need of apparel/personal items in preparation for academic and employment interviews.
